By: Richard Blomstein, HealthInsuranceFree.com The cost of group health insurance has a huge impact on the profit margin of most employers. However, group health insurance coverage is one of the most important group insurances that an employer can and must provide his employees with. Not only will group insurance plans save an employer the unnecessary worry that he or she has to go through every time an employee falls sick or has an accident, while performing their duties but good or attractive group health insurance plans will help an organization or company to attract and retain quality employees. This is because the cost of hospitalization, medicines, laboratory and surgical fees is pretty high and without insurance, impossible to meet. But now days, employers find it extremely confusing when it comes to selecting an affordable group health insurance plan that provides the maximum benefits to their employees without cutting into their profits. This is mainly because, over the past couple of decades, lawmakers have laid down a list of things that need to be covered by these group health insurance plans. These, new laws stating the things that have to be covered by the group health insurance does considerably improve the benefits to the employee, however, it has also resulted in the significant increase in the price of the health insurance. For example, now items like maternity care constitute a major portion of the cost of group health coverage, even for a business that has employees who largely are single and male. The end result of these authorized benefits is that business owners have less freedom to custom-fit these insurance plans to suit the particular needs of their businesses. However, there are many benefits to opting for a group health insurance plan. And they out weigh the disadvantages by far. They are cheaper than individual plans, in the long run because the insurance companies stand to profit from having more people on their plans. Another benefit of a group plan is that many employers often cover part or all of the insurance premiums. Also, because an insurance company insures all employees under a group policy, employees don’t need to go in for physical exams or fill up health history survey. This makes it easier to get health insurance especially in the case of people who have some pre-existing health problems. And last but not the least, there is the advantage that a group health policy covers people regardless of their age or present state of health. However, the main advantage of group health insurance is the flexibility it gives the employees. These group insurance plans allow individuals or employees to visit any doctor or hospital they want and receive coverage for any treatment covered under the policy. So, the members can go to any specialist without a referral, and there is nothing much the insurance company can do to prevent them from doing so. Needless to say most insurance companies refuse to offer this flexibility. Also, as mentioned earlier, there is the lack of choice when it comes to group health insurance plans. Therefore, you’ll have to make do with a group plan tailor made for an entire group and not any particular individual. And also, a person registered in a group health care plan has no say in the kind of policy, the amount of premium, deductible and maximum lifetime coverage it provides. So, employers should remember the needs of their employees and carefully evaluate the health care situation of their employees before making a decision. For example, if one of your dependants of employees has special health care needs then look for a group policy that offers the coverage that you might need.
